Bleeders
Exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) or “Bleeders” is caused by excessive dust, ammonia buildup and allergens and causes the horse’s lungs to bleed. Severe EIPH shortens a horse’s racing career. Moderate to severe EIPH is associated with a worsened finishing position in a race.
EHV-1 Virus
or “Equine herpesvirus-1” is one of the most critical and prevalent viral pathogens of horses and is a major threat to the equine industry worldwide. EHV-1 primarily targets the respiratory system however viral spread to distant organs activates the development of more severe conditions; including abortion and neurologic disease.
Strangles
Strangles is a highly contagious disease of the equine upper respiratory tract caused by the bacteria. The disease occurs worldwide and is the most common infectious agent identified in horses 6 to 10 years of age. Horses become infected through inhalation or ingestion of the bacterium.
